School Absence and Truancy Protocol

Absence Action
Absence 3 The principal will contact the parent or legal guardian to discuss the parent’s/legal guardian’s responsibility to enforce the student’s attendance as well as the civil penalties that may be incurred if the student is habitually absent (RS 14:92.2).
Absence 5 The parent/legal guardian must attend a mandatory conference with the principal or designee to discuss make-up work and recovery options. The parent/legal guardian will be informed that for additional unexcused absences, the student will be referred to the district’s Truancy Support Panel.
Absence 7 The principal or designee will notify the Truancy Support Panel. A truancy hearing will be scheduled.
Absence 10 The student will be referred to the proper court. Here the court will determine the civil penalties that may be incurred, the need for prosecution, and/or the sanctions placed upon the student and parents/legal guardians.
